It hit about 88 degrees today in Arlington, MA. Hot and humid and an awful environment for my daily jog.
As I was sweating and willing myself to keep up my pace, I thought back to the weather just a week ago, where we were in the low and upper 50s. According to Weather Spark, the average high in Boston around this time of May is in upper 60s.
So, it was definitely a scorcher today. With climate change, my preferred season, autumn, gets shorter and shorter. It is somewhat balanced out by the fact that spring here is actually a bit warmer as we scrape ourselves out of the tail end of winter, but it also means that summer comes around far too quickly.
I know, I know, there are plenty of people who love the promise of beaches, flip flops, and vacations that summer brings. Not, me. Nope, not me. Bugs? Sun burns? Sand in my bathing suit? Sweat-induced thigh chafing? No thank you.
In fact, I’ve found so much joy in the fact that there are TikTok accounts out there solely devoted to counting down the days until Halloween. There’s even a site with a dedicated Halloween countdown calendar. We’re now at 161 days, 9 hours, and 47 minutes (make that 46 minutes) until Halloween. Hip, hip, hooray!
161 days until sweater weather. 161 days until pumpkin spice lattes. 161 days until crisp, refreshing autumn air, with just a hint of iciness. 161 days until all of the bugs die off and the leaves explode in a riot of colors. 161 days until true happiness.
Given all of these Halloween and autumn devotees on social media, I know that I’m not alone in my love for all things autumn.
So, now, if you don’t mind, I’m going to turn on my little Vornado fan, close my eyes, and pretend like the nights are getting longer, and I can smell cinnamon and wood smoke in the air.
