I had been trying to wean myself off of my awful Twitter habit. But, I’ll succumb to the siren call of doom scrolling every now and then and log in to check out the latest terrible news. Of course, since my layoff, it seems like it’s been nonstop layoff news. The most recent round at The Washington Post seems to be focused on gaming media, which just seems so shortsighted given recent high-profile video game/TV adaptations and ever-increasing game sales.
But who am I to talk? Here I am writing for free for an adventure gaming site (the newest one I’m writing for is Adventure Game Hotspot -- go check out my most recent review, Nightmare Frames). I do this because I love it though. I really enjoy playing the games, and I love writing the reviews. It gives me great writing practice, and small, independent adventure games have some truly innovative storytelling.
One of my goals this year is to spend less time doom scrolling and more time playing games for pleasure. It’s so different playing games for review. When I’m reviewing, I have my notebook out, and I pay attention to unique storytelling techniques. I listen for sound work and music, and I keep track of frustrating gameplay moments. One of my favorite game reviews to write was my review for The Cat Lady. The developer’s unique voice and vision was so fun (yet dark) to explore.
But, I’m also hoping to play more games for fun, where I can just bask in the glory of exploring and leisurely follow along with what is, hopefully, a well-told story. Here’s to more game playing and less doom scrolling!
