One of the things that I really enjoyed about my job was creating art every day in Illustrator. Now that I’m on my own, I can experiment with my own palettes, fonts, templates -- the freedom is exhilarating! This straightforward practice uses the blend tool and the transform tool (using the distort and transform functionality) to create a simple and pretty spiral shape. There’s a bit of an error in the tutorial -- one of the ends of the spirals was sitting on top of the beginning of the first spiral, so it wasn’t lending itself to a super smooth gradient. I kind of fudged it by making the bottom spiral all pink. Still, it’s fun to get back into the swing of playing around with vector art.

I’m supplementing my hobby painting with learning more vector tips and tricks in Illustrator. I’ve spent a few days on a gouache painting of sunflowers, and urghh, I’m going to set it aside because it’s just not coming out the way I want it to. I have to remind myself that it’s just a sketchbook and paper -- it isn’t precious, and it’s always about the practice. Time to move onto the next painting practice -- I’m almost done with my current gouache sketchbook; maybe I’ll make a TikTok going through all of the completed pages.
Here’s to art therapy!
