I know that my thoughts don’t matter after yet another mass shooting event just happened in Kansas City. On a day that was supposed to be filled with celebrations and fun, instead we have chaos, death, and many, many injured celebrants.
Of course, we’re going to have the regular parade of politicians sharing their thoughts and prayers. And, of course, it’s beyond tragic that a decade old article in the satirical Onion perfectly encapsulates what is sure to be the Republican bottom line on the event: “‘No Way To Prevent This,’ Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens.”
I know that my thoughts don’t matter. My thoughts won’t stop bullets. My thoughts won’t bring back the person who died. But my actions do matter. I have donated to Everytown.org in the past, and I will do so again. This organization was the result of the 2014 merger of two groups in the US: Mayors Against Illegal Guns and Moms Demand Action. The organization provides information, data, and action items for what you can do in your local area to prevent and reduce gun violence.
This may not be the organization for you, but please, please, if you are in the US, research how you can reduce gun violence in your neighborhood. We may be on opposite ends of the political spectrum, but I can’t imagine that anyone would ever work toward more gun violence. Surely, reducing gun violence is something that we can all work together on.
