How to deal with rejection

I knew this journey that I started after being laid off would be full of ups and downs. Mostly downs, but the ups have come in the form of kind words and connections made. I’ve been consistently applying for jobs ever since I found out I was laid off. Most times, I haven’t heard anything back, but some (3 so far) companies get back to you right away to let you know that while they thank you for the application, they’ve found someone with a better skillset.

It can be demoralizing and frustrating. I have been on the other side, going through resumes and picking and choosing. I know my own skills and what I’m capable of doing, and I know that I could do a kick-ass job for anything I’ve decided to apply to. But, instead of letting this get me down, I’ve done some soul-searching and tried to decide what I really want to do. Since I have the benefit of time, I’m going to try my hand at freelancing. I’ve done a lot of freelance copyediting in the past, and I’m going to spend some time thinking about how to create and then market my editing business. I’ll be doing some networking over the coming months, and for the first time since this layoff, I feel excited.

I’m not going to lie, I’m a little bit scared, but if I don’t take advantage of this severance package, I’d be kicking myself. Here’s to bigger and better things.
